Forgot your SSO ID, or forgot your password?

These are two different problems with two different fixes, and mixing them up just wastes a step.

This Page

Don’t remember your username

Recover it by SMS using the instructions above. The system will text your SSO ID directly to your registered mobile number.

Separate Tool

Remember username, password won’t work

This requires the Forgot Password tool, which resets your password using an OTP instead of an SMS lookup.

Not sure which one applies? Try logging in with any username you can recall. If the portal says the ID doesn’t exist, you need this page. If it recognises the ID but rejects the password, you need the other one.
Checklist

What you need for the SMS method to actually work

The recovery SMS only works if a few things line up. Most failed recovery attempts trace back to one of these three, not an actual system fault.

1. The right phone

The phone in your hand right now must be the one registered on your SSO account β€” not a new SIM with the same number ported later, and not a family member’s phone you used at signup.

2. Unblocked reception

You have normal SMS reception. DND (Do Not Disturb) settings on some networks block short codes like 9223166166 β€” check that first if nothing arrives.

3. Plain text format

You must send it exactly as written: RJ SSO, with a space and absolutely no punctuation marks.

The harder version

What if that mobile number isn’t yours anymore

This is common β€” people register once, change phones a few years later, and never update their profile. If the number tied to your SSO ID is lost, deactivated, or reassigned, here is what you do.

1. Acknowledge SMS won’t work

You can’t self-recover by SMS β€” the system has no other automated way to reach you securely.

2. Call the Helpdesk

Contact the SSO helpdesk directly (numbers at the bottom of this page) and explain that your registered mobile is no longer active.

3. Prove your identity

Be ready to prove who you are β€” your Jan Aadhaar number, BRN, or SIPF details (whichever you originally registered with) will be asked for.

4. Fallback: e-Mitra Kiosk

If phone support doesn’t resolve it, an in-person visit to an e-Mitra kiosk is the fallback β€” they can verify identity documents directly rather than over a call.

There’s no shortcut here by design β€” the whole point of tying recovery to a mobile number is to stop someone else from claiming your ID.
It happens

Why people lose track of their SSO ID in the first place

Worth naming, because it’s rarely carelessness. None of these are unusual, and none of them mean starting over is the right move.

Set up and forgotten

It was set up years ago, for one specific service, and never touched again until a new department portal (say, an RPSC recruitment form) suddenly asked for it.

Done by someone else

A family member or an e-Mitra operator registered it on someone’s behalf, and the person themselves never saw the original username.

Multiple registrations

Registrations happened over time β€” once as a student, once as a job applicant β€” and it’s genuinely unclear which one is still active.

A tempting shortcut

Don’t just register a new one β€” here’s why

When recovery feels slow, the tempting shortcut is to register a fresh SSO ID instead of chasing down the old one. Resist it, especially if you’ve ever used your SSO ID for a recruitment application (RPSC, RSMSSB, RSSB) or through Shala Darpan.

  • You lose your history

Your application history, exam form status, and past submissions are tied to the original ID, not a new one.

  • It creates system flags

A second SSO ID under the same Jan Aadhaar, BRN, or SIPF record creates a duplicate the system will eventually flag, which is more work to untangle later than recovering the first one now.

  • Recovery is still faster

Recovery, even the slow route through the helpdesk, is still faster than re-doing every single application you’ve already submitted under the old ID.

Stay Safe

Recovery is also when scams try hardest

The moment someone’s locked out is exactly when they’re least careful β€” which is why this is worth saying plainly.

It is completely free

The real recovery method is free and only ever asks you to send an SMS to 9223166166. Nobody legitimate charges a fee to “retrieve” your SSO ID.

No OTP calls

The SSO helpdesk will never call you asking for your OTP to “verify and recover” your account β€” that’s not how the system works, and it’s a common scam pattern.

Use official channels

Only use the official number and portal. Search results and forwarded messages claiming to offer “SSO ID recovery services” are not affiliated with the government and should be ignored.

Common questions

Recovery-specific FAQ

How many times can I request the recovery SMS?
There’s no hard limit for genuine attempts, but if it’s not arriving after two or three tries, the issue is almost always the mobile number itself rather than the number of requests β€” check that before retrying endlessly.
I have more than one SSO ID from different years β€” which one do I recover?
Whichever one you actually used for the service you’re trying to get back into. If you genuinely can’t tell, the helpdesk can look up what’s tied to your Jan Aadhaar, BRN, or SIPF record.
Does SSO ID recovery cost anything?
No. It’s free by SMS, and free through the helpdesk. Treat any request for payment as a scam.
Can I recover my SSO ID without my registered mobile at all?
Not through the SMS method β€” that’s the whole mechanism. You’ll need to go through the helpdesk or an e-Mitra kiosk with identity proof instead.
I recovered my SSO ID β€” now what?
Head to the login page and sign in with it. If you don’t remember the password either, that’s the separate Forgot Password tool, not this one.
Will recovering my SSO ID show it to anyone else, like family members with the same phone?
The SMS reply goes to whoever controls that phone number, so if it’s a shared family phone, anyone with access to it can see the message. If that’s a concern, it’s worth updating your profile to a personal number once you’re back in.
